5.0 out of 5 stars Rotating rasp works well on Ipe wood (Brazilian hardwood), February 7, 2015

Nice rotating rasp. I work with Ipe to make kitchen utensils for family and friends. It's a very hard, but beautiful-when-finished, oily wood that I first used to build the floor of my outside deck. It's so dense that it does not float in dishwater. Consequently it's extremely difficult to hand carve. This rotating rasp works well to rough out spoon and ladle bowls. I placed it in my drill press and locked the spindle in a down position about two inches above the drill press table, and it did the job.
One note: Don't try to use it as a drill bit - it does not do that job. Its outer surface is the "business end" not the bull nose. The bull nose will final out inside surfaces and prepare them for sanding, but it's not meant for drilling. I use a regular, wood/metal bit to "bee comb" the bowl. Then is when I employ this rasp to "connect the dots" and rough out the workpiece.
Bottom line: best rasp I've found, and it's stood up to many applications...so far. Hasn't dulled yet.

I got this to use on a horizontal drill press when shaping objects made from recycled HDPE (#2 plastic) and it works great. It's small which has advantages and disadvantages but at no fault of the tool. The teeth are aggressive and resist getting gummed up. Especially on softer woods I would think this would do a good job.

Use them on mild steel daily and they are the best rasping bits for the money. They suggest use for wood and I'd imagine they'd last for years if I only used them on wood... Can't ask for much more!
