5.0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought this combo, November 16, 2014
    By

I tend to agonize over most tool purchases. Some tools are disposable or will be used for only one project and for those, Harbor Freight stuff is fine. For tools that need to last and be reliable, though, I research them and go nuts trying to decide.

I'm doing a load of DIY house remodeling currently and desperately needed to upgrade my cordless drill, which was cheap Chinese junk and had a very short battery life. If you read the reviews here on amazon you quickly get the impression that *all* power tools--even the big name brands--have their issues.

With DeWalt drills, the issue you see mentioned a bunch is "chuck wobble", more properly called runout. I can see their point, but the runout on my drill is nowhere near as bad as some of the reviews described. If I were to use a really long drill bit it would become quite noticeable but for typical drill bits it's a non-issue for carpentry type work.

There are also complaints of the chuck loosening and I did experience that *but* I quickly found that if you crank down hard when tightening the chuck, it does not come loose during use.

The day after I bought the combo I put it to some hard use doing some electrical work that involved using some 3/4" spade bits to put holes in 2x4s and 2x6s, including double thicknesses in some cases. I quickly found out two things. First, this drill has some serious torque for a compact drill. You had better be on your 'A' game when using a spade bit with this drill because when it "catches", that torque is transferred to your wrists. You need to hold it solidly with two hands and don't even think about using dull spade bits. I used one cheap dull space bit and it caught. There was so much torque that it bent the spade end of the bit a lot. Second, the 3 LED lights on the drill, along with it's compact size and weight and super nice when working in dark spaces. This is more than just a "nice to have" feature--this directly affects your ability to get the task done quickly and well when working in environments with less than ideal lighting.

The drill is also damn tough. I was doing some reflooring in the attic and the drill got knocked over, causing it to fall about 7 ft. onto an aluminum bench, which it dented, and then bounce off onto the floor. There was no apparent damage and it still works like a champ.

The driver is equally nice but it took some time for me to get accustomed to the very light trigger that it has. I like that trigger quite a bit now. The driver is compact and does the job well.

The combo comes with two 2 AH batteries and while I have no clue whether the claim of "57% more runtime" is true, I did run one battery all the way down within a few hours of putting the drill to a lot of use. For typical DIY stuff around the house, those batteries are more than adequate. Since I am doing some remodeling projects and will be using the drill and driver all day (put in a 16 hr day yesterday) I picked up a 2 pack of 3 AH batteries just to make sure that I have enough power for hard use throughout a long day.

One more thing. I decided on this combo after talking with a guy I know who works at Home Depot. He is a former contractor and knows his tools very well. Since he works in the hardware department he sees which tools get returned often and with his contracting experience knows what to look for to get bang for the buck. His recommendation was a Rigid combo and their was value to be had with that but for me the deciding factor was ergonomics. Since I will be using these tools for hours at a time, they need to be comfortable to use. The tools in this combo are a pleasure in the hand compared to many others.

Bottom line: These tools are great for light-to-medium duty use and will easily handle just about any DIYer house repair or remodeling project. I have no clue how they would stand up to professional use but I suspect they would do well. Very glad I chose this combo.

I work in the property management field and all of my techs told my this was the best drill set you can buy. I purchased it for my hubby for his birthday and he is beyond thrilled. So far he has built a wine cabinet, baby gate and raised garden beds for me! I'd say its a win-win! :-)

  3. 5.0 out of 5 stars It gets to be Confusing with so Many Different Battery ..., April 28, 2017

It gets to be Confusing with so Many Different Battery Voltage Configurations for Wireless Tools. I have purchased many DEWALT Tools over the years, in Both the Wireless and Wired Versions, as well as Bosche and Makita brands. DEWALT has come Up with a Winner in This 20V MAX XR Lithium Ion battery powered System. One of the Many Factors to be Considered when Purchasing a Battery Powered Drill is the Weight of the Tool Itself. Battery Powered Drills have almost Made the Wired Versions Obsolete. If you are Using a Drill for just Ordinary Around the House Purposes, then This Drill/Driver Duo is Not for You. This 20V MAX XR Lithium Ion Drill/Driver Duo by DEWALT is Intended for Heavy Duty Use and as such Weighs More than your Average Drill/Driver set. So make Sure to Try or Lift Whichever Drill you are Considering to Purchase First, Before Making your Decision!
DEWALT has since Come Out with Many Different Tools that Are Using the 20V MAX XR Lithium Ion Battery System.

I can't say I LOVE it...It works though and I'll likely keep it. It's not nearly as bright as I was hoping it would be. It also is rather big and does not have many provisions for holding it around cars while working. I would like to see a magnet on it, maybe I'll add on to a the bottom of a battery... I would not all this an "area" light, but more of a 5' flood light.

This is a fantastic light. The shell of it is nice and sturdy like the other tools in the XR series.
It is extremely bright, and has two light settings cycled easily with the trigger. It easily lit up darkened rooms and attic space.
I haven't had it long enough to test out the battery life yet.
The head swivels a full 180° which is pretty nifty.
It is also still very light with my 2.0ah battery on it.
The loop on top is also rugged like the rest of the case.

Oh Yes, this light is quite useful in certain areas where light may be needed.. Long lasting run time as needed.
If I had one request it would be that the positioning adjuster was a bit more stronger.
To be fair.. I haven't gotten with dewalt to see if this can be adjusted. However, It's something that should be readily accessible if needed.
